Spanish (MFL)

In line with the new National Curriculum 2014 we now teach Spanish at St Joseph’s across Key Stage 2

 “Hola y bienvenidos a St Joseph’s”

Why Spanish?

There are various reasons as to why Spanish has been chosen as the language to learn within our school. Firstly, after completing a pupil voice survey it became apparent that Spain was a popular tourist destination for our children to visit and this meant that they would most likely have the opportunity to experience the culture and lifestyle of being in Spain. Secondly, over 20 Countries speak the language, which means that there will be greater opportunity for children to practise their second language and be able to communicate with those living in Spain. Finally, our school already has established links within the umbrella trust and this will allow for progression of the children’s skills as they move through to Key Stage 3.

The National Curriculum 2014

The National Curriculum 2014 states that children at Key Stage 2 should be taught to:

  • listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures
  • develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences
  • read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the language
  • broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary
  • write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences, to express ideas clearly
  • describe people, places, things and actions orally* and in writing
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including (where relevant): feminine, masculine and neuter forms and the conjugation of high-frequency verbs; key features and patterns of the language; how to apply these, for instance, to build sentences; and how these differ from or are similar to English

Spanish (Español)

How will this be achieved?

Children will receive a dedicated Spanish lesson each week, which will focus on different areas of the language each week which will then be developed further within classroom bases throughout the week.   We will also celebrate European Languages Day on September 26th each year, offering children the opportunity to find out more about the Spanish culture, lifestyle, food, dance, music as well as many other areas.

Additionally, children will have the opportunity for daily practise in their new target language as registration will be completed by class teachers in Spanish.

Our Aim:

By the time children leave St Joseph’s they will know how to greet one another, how to tell others important information about themselves and  each other, they will know days of the week and months of the year, as well as numbers, colours and be able to state where they live in the world.  They will be able to write in simple sentences in the target language using the present tense and perform simple conversations confidently on a range of everyday topics. Overall they will have a greater appreciation for the country and its culture.
