Founded in 1979 by a former music industry exec, Activision became the first developer and distributor of videogame cartridges for the Atari 2600 in the 1980s. Since then the company has merged with Vivendi Games (including Blizzard) and grown to become the largest third-party developer in the world! Now Activision-Blizzard is responsible for globally recognised franchises such as Call of Duty, Skylanders, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk, as well as leading Blizzard franchises such as World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo.
Activision-Blizzard holds a number of world records with Call of Duty: Black Ops II being the fastest entertainment property to gross $1billion in global sales in just 15 days. The company’s Skylanders franchise also hit the headlines in 2013 with the news that in just 15 months the franchise grossed $1billion in global sales – an accolade unheard of for a kids property.
